dorm culture

After waking up slightly fuzzy headed and a little tired, I was pleased to note that I hadn’t created a disturbance when coming back to my dorm the previous evening. I went to breakfast with Nick and a Scottish lad who was travelling around Europe on a railpass. He had arrived on friday afternoon but didnt come out with us as he was on a budget and had blown it all the previous day in Copenhagen.

Another beautiful day in Gothenburg, not a cloud in the sky. I really did get lucky with the weather.

Saturday was spent pretty much the same way as the day before, however I didn’t hire the bicycle so I was able to look at the sights I hadn’t managed to see the day before, or look at those I had missed whilst whizzing by on my Happy Days bicycle.

First of all I headed to an old fort which for a few hundred years had stood overlooking the city, its cannons protecting the city from marauders. Beacuse of its high vantage point, it afforded some decent views of the city and surrounding area.

From the fort (known as the Crown) you could see Haga, the oldest part of the city. With its cobblestone paved streets and shops which spilled out onto the street it was a pretty cool place where it was possible to lose a few hours.

I also managed to find a bar that was showing Liverpool Vs Tottenham live on TV, so I had a few beers and watched the game, which was pretty cool as you can’t see live Saturday afternoon games in England!

The evenings proceedings were kicked off slowly but steadily, Nick & I drinking vodka and coke in the hostel until it was time to head back out to the Avenyn. We arrived at the Avenyn at about ten, and expected it to be as packed as the night before. This wasn’t the case, Apparently, in Sweden, everyone goes out straight from work on a Friday night and gets mullered, so by 10p.m you have a lot of drunk people about. On a Saturday, it seemed that people took it much easier and didn’t go out until a bit later, so we were in a bar with no-one else in it for a bit, but it soon filled up until it was even more packed than the day before. Nick & I got talking to a few girls, (again I’m really bad with names), one of which was born on exactly the same day as me, 3rd May 1980.

What a club it turned out to be, frequented by the coolest people in Sweden. The picture doesn’t do it justice, but the outfit this particular dude was wearing was SHARP.

At about two a.m it was time to call it a night and we headed back to the hostel. Once there it a big effort not to make noise in the dorm and to get to bed without waking everone up. I think I failed miserably. I am going to have to improve my being-quiet-while-drunk skills I think!
