La Paz: Bumming Around

This entry is part 4 of 43 in the series Mexico

Day 15 – Tuesday 4th October 2005

After a sound sleep I got up eager to see a few of the sights around La Paz. First port of call thought, was breakfast. Shrimp tacos, delicious. At breakfast I got chatting to an Aussie guy, Rob, who was pretty much planning to do the same journey as me for the next few days, so we went up to the ferry office to book a ticket across to Topolobampo, which is the docking point of the ferry across to the mainland. After a bit of searching we found the office, but they said that if we just rocked up to the ferry terminal the next day when we were planning to sail, we would be able to get the tickets for $50 pesos less.

Rob had a few things to sort out so we deicided to meet up later that day. In the meantime I visited the museum of History of Baja California, the other marina in town (La Paz has a high population of Americans who come down on their yachts for the fishing and for their holidays), and the virtually deserted beach near the town.

After a few hours looking at the yachts and trying to concoct schemes in which I could get the money to buy one of those, and a few more hours tanning on the beach and swimming in the Gulf of Mexico, I hitched a lift back into town with an American guy who worked as a chef on one of the yachts in the marina.

Again I needed to type some more stories of the holiday in America with the boys, so I went to the internet and read my emails (which put a smile on my face, keep them coming people) and finished putting the USA part of the blog on the site. Except the photos. N.B. I am still having trouble even finding a place which has USB Ports to transfer my photos from my camera, which is pretty full at the moment.

Met up with Rob and went for some food, more tacos, am loving them at the moment, then just wandered around town and watched some chicks playing beach volleyball.

La Paz is a really laid back place. It has a lot lot of American retirees there, and it is not hard to see why. The weather is great, the food is sublime and the atmosphere of the town has a very good feel to it. I am a bit dissapointed I rushed through Baja so quickly, apparently some of the towns such as Loreto and Mulege are equally as nice. A lot of American, apart from the ones on yachts and the retirees, were driving through, and its definately a holiday I would consider taking in the future when I am back in the 9-5 routine.
