Mazatlan: Not Marzipan

Day 21 - Monday 10th October 2005

I arrived in Mazatlan at about 11am and tried to find a room for the night. I firstly went to the beach but the hostels didnt look too secure so I decided to go to the old town and get a room there. This was after I had walked a while with my pack in the heat and I was pretty much drenched in sweat by the time I had managed to find a good place, so it was into the shower and out to look around the old town.

I originally went to Mazatlan to soak up some rays, but it was pretty overcast when I arrived so I went to the coast for some lunch and then strolled around instead, looking in some of the shops and at the plazas. I went into the museum where I found a picture of an interesting little island I had planned on visiting in the next few days called Mexcalititan.

The town had a nice little atmosphere to it, and although it was supposed to be a big destination for American tourists, there were not so many around. That seems to be most of the places I have visited so far, and that is because the major tourist season in Mexico starts around late Novemeber. So as far as coming in the peak season goes, I have mistimed the trip. I think that is probably a good thing however as prices are quite low at the moment and hotels all have room in them, so I am not having to book ahead. On the bad side is there doesnt seem to be a lot of other backpackers around, which can make it difficult to meet people who I can travel with for a few days, but I am not too worried by that. I am getting better at being in my own company and not worrying if I dont have a real conversation with anyone for a few days.
