Guadalajara: Musuem Time
Day 27 - Sunday 17th October 2005
Musuems in Mexico are generally free to enter on Sundays. I thought that this would lead to them being fairly busy, so I got up to be the early bird and catch the worm before the masses tried to eat him as well. Making the most of my time, I dropped my laundry off for a service wash while I looked at the history of Mexico in the Museo Regional de Guadalajara & the Instituto Cultural de Cabanas. Unfortunately cameras were not allowed inside either musuem so I had to settle for using my freshly charged batteries on the streets. The center of Guadalajara is quite compact, with most of the tourist attractions located around the impressive cathedral.
The catherdral is surrounded by 4 plazas, including the Rotunda de los Hombres and the Plaza de la Liberacion. During October the town holds its annual festival, and as part of this the Plaza de la Liberacion had been turned into a market, the most interesting thing however was the guys who were creating carvings from lumps of concrete.
Along with the above the theatre, the Palacio de Justica and the Plaza Tapiata made for some excellent architecture, giving some fine Spanish colonial views. However it is the cathedral that is the most celebrated building. After lunch, in the market, I went into it, but there were services going on and, not being overly religious I didnt really want to hang around for the whole thing, so I listened for about 10 minutes and left. Even in the early evening, the streets were packed.
As part of the October festivals, there were two more live acts on the outdoor stage. It was to be an Argentinian themed evening. I arrived early, took up a seat and watched an Argentinian folk singer, followed by a superb display of the Tango and numerous other dances, put on by a dance school, brought up from Argentina. They were handing out flyers advertising a workshop to learn to Tango, to be held the coming week, and I was tempted for a second, but it didnt really tie in with my plans, and besides, I will probably go to Argentina, so if I still want to do it, I´ll do it in the proper place!
I walked home, past the cathedral all lit up, and called it a night.

I have finally left Zacatecas, I ended up staying five nights after initially planning to stay for only two, but I had a lot of fun there, which is what I am all about!
Now I am in San Luis Potosi, but will prob go down to Guantanujato tomorrow as the lads I have been hanging out with for the last few days say it is a great city.
I´m nowhere near the hurricanes btw.
Hope no-one has caught bird flu yet. Peace out.
