Veracruz: Beach Maybe? Maybe Not

Day 43 - Tuesday 1st November 2005

I caught the bus to Veracruz on the Gulf coast in the morning, and arrived after lunchtime. I quickly realised there wasn’t much going on in the town and that I was going to struggle to find things to do. It reminded me a bit of Felixstowe where I used to work, with not much happening and a stiff breeze blowing in from the coast!

I had already paid for a hotel by the time I realised this, so decided to stay overnight in the hope something would happen to make me like the town a little more! I had orignally gone to Veracruz to have some beach time, not having seen the ocean since Sayulita about 3 or 4 weeks previously. As I seem to have found thus far, the day I want to go to the beach turns out to be poor weather for it, and this day was no exception. A gale was blowing in off the sea, making the air quite chilly, not suitable for laying on the beach. This mistiming of beach weather could be incredibily bad luck, but it probably has more to do with the fact that I have not checked a weather forecast once since I have been away.

Anyway all clouds having a silver lining. I was falling a long way behind with the blog and needed a few hours to type some entries and link in some photos, so I took the opportunity to do just that. In the end I spent about 2 1/2 hours working on the site.

As far as the blog is concerned, I am enjoying writing about the days when I am doing a lot, such as Teotihucan or in Mexico City. I also find myself thinking about little bits and pieces to put add into the blog during the day. The quiet days however, such as this one, are a bit of a pain to write about as they are not really interesting, just more of a space filler. I may skip days like this in future, or write about something else rather than what I did, such as an observation on the culture or something like that.

  1. I left Oaxaca last nite and got an overnight bus to San Cristobal. I think I’ll base myself here for a week as there are a number of things around here, then I’m going into Guatemala.

Mannequin Man: Thanks mate, loving the beard too. Think I will leave it until Xmas day then shave it all off! The photos from US look amazing, keep sending me them!
