Palenque: Roughing It

Day 54 - Saturday 12th November 2005

I had originally planned to get up early on Sunday morning and travel up to Palenque to see the ancient Mayan city of the same name, however myself and James found ourselves at loose ends and adjusted our plans to go up on Saturday instead.

San Cristobal: The Lakes

Day 53 - Friday 11th November 2005

Near to San Cristobal lies a series of lakes known as the Lagos de Montebello. These lakes were supposed to be spectacular and thus I wanted to visit them, so thats what I did. It was possible to do a tour of the lakes for the day, but fresh from my successfully organised independant tour I opted to go by myself.

San Cristobal: Learning New Things

Day 52 - Thursday 10th November 2005

They say you learn something new every day. Today I learned that if I had been born in a Mayan culture, I probably would have had a swollen penis as a child. I learned this interesting fact in the Mayan Medicine Development Centre, which I visited in the morning.

Canon Del Sumidero: Beast Vs Lancha

Day 51 - Wednesday 9th November 2005

After spending much of the previous evening planning the coming week, I woke up early ready to take a boat trip through the Canon del Sumidero. I went to a tour company who quoted me $160 Pesos but I would have to wait until the next day, so I used public transport and did it myself. I got to the departure point of the lanchas, waited about half hour for the boat to fill up (a minimum of ten people were needed for the boat to leave the dock) and we set off.

San Cristobal: Zapatista

Days 49 & 50 - Monday 7th & Tuesday 8th November 2005

When I arrived in San Cristobal at 9am after 12 hours on an overnight bus it was cold, raining and I was tired. Thus I decided to use the day to do some of the more mundane things one must do such as catching up on the blog and laundry. I did however manqage to find a bar that was showing the Spurs Vs Bolton game, so I watched that live. It was good to see some English football even if it was the wrong result.

Oaxaca: The Tree of El Tule

Day 48 - Sunday 6th November 2005

Yet again, it was a slow start to the day. When I did get going I hopped onto a bus with James, a lad on the last leg of an 8 month world trip. We travelled on the bus for an hour covering a staggering 10km when we reached our destination of El Tule. The village of El Tule although pretty, would not be on the tourist trail if it wasn’t for one thing - El Arbol del Tule (The Tree of El Tule).

Oaxaca: White Mountain

Day 47 - Saturday 5th November 2005

Saturday started slowly! Having got back to my hostel at 3am I woke up around 10am. After a light breakfast, Jeffrey the American guy gave me a lift on the back of his motorbike up to the ancient Zapotec capital Monte Alban, or White Mountain. The journey took about 15 minutes up a mountainside, reaching the flattened hilltop on which the ruins stand.
