Antigua: What to do before Christmas

24 December 2005 18 Comments

Day 92 - Tuesday 20th December 2005

My final 4 hours of classes came and went, I said goodbye to my teacher and some of the students, packed my things and sat down over lunch, trying to decide what to do in the five days before Christmas. I wanted to visit Semuc Champey, a series of lakes and waterfalls in the middle of the country, and my plan was simple.

As soon as I had finished lunch I could jump on a bus to Coban, stay overnight there, take another bus in the morning, visit Semuc Champey, and return the way I had been to the lake on Friday. I worked it all out and thought I would have enough time to make it, barring any delays. As I didn’t really want to get stranded for Christmas, the big debate was whether I wanted to bank on there being no delays and everything going according to plan.

I had lunch and decided to call time on travelling for the next few days, and go into holiday mode. I would visit Semuc Champey between Christmas and New Year.

With the decision made I set about catching up with the blog and generally getting myself organised for the festive period. I moved my things into a hostel closer to where the lads were staying and generally whiled away the hours reading. I was preparing for an early night when I started talking to a guy in my dorm room who told me that a band called Buena Vista Social Club were in town and had played two impromtu gighs the two nights previous and were playing their third and final gig that evening in a bar just around the corner.

I had heard of them and had listened to some of their stuff before, but I wasn’t much up with the history of the band, so I wont try to explain, but take a look at this link which will expalin it better than I can. The music by the way, was quality!
