Antigua: Its Almost Christmas

This entry is part 19 of 27 in the series Guatemala

Day 93 – Wednesday 21st December 2005

With only 4 days to go until Xmas I had yet to see the usual hype and inescapable barrage of everything Christmasy that tends to surround the festive period in the UK. In fact I would have said that for a country that is 90% Christian, the whole event was considerably understated. Or perhaps in the UK the whole event is entiryely overstated!

I had really only seen Christmas decorations in the streets during the last week or so,and Chrsitmas songs had only been played on the radio for maybe two weeks. Add to that the lack of shops dedicating themselves to filling their shelves with festive wares, the 25 degree heat and with only 4 days to go, it felt like the least Christmasy I had ever felt. I wasn’t being a scrooge but apart from a few lights and sone festive songs it still felt like summer, not the shortest day of the year.

I did get a pang of homesickness a few days prior to this when the son of the woman I was staying with spent all day making the decorations and putting up the tree, and when I returned to the house I saw all the lights and stuff. But then I realised I’d still have to get up and go to work if I was a t home so the feeling passed!

On a lighter note, the shortest day has now passed folks, summer is on the way and it will soon be cricket season!
