Granada: Sampling the Local Produce

This entry is part 2 of 10 in the series Nicaragua

Day 114 – Wednesday 11th January 2006

A lay-in would have been ideal after the travelling nightmare of the day before, however the parrots in the hostel had other ideas as they began screaming as loud as they could at about 5am, scuppering any chance of more sleep. Tell me this, why would anyone want a pet that screams and squawks at 5am. Especially when you are the owner of a hotel.

As a result of the noise we were up early, which helped us secure a room at The Bearded Monkey for that evening. Being in a new town we decided to kill two birds with one stone by having a look around and getting some breakfast. However by the time we had eaten it was too hot to walk around for long so we saw the main plaza, the cathedral and the lake front before heading back to the hostel until later in the day. After a few hours I decided that I needed to do a few things, such as inquire about bus tickets to Costa Rica, laundry, internet and finally I decided to buy a bottle of rum. By the time I had done all that daylight was fading fast so I could see the main sights that day.

What with all the chilling out we had also regained some energy. Given there wasn’t any daylight remaining in which to expend said energy, we were forced to expend it during the evening, mainly by drinking the aforementioned bottle of rum between us. This rum – Flor de Caña – is the produce of Nicaragua and those in the know say that it is superior to Cuban rum. We had discovered Flor de Caña in Honduras and thought it would have been rude not to rekindle the alliance in its native country. Not wanting to be rude, our excess energy and Ryvo – who fanices himself to be a bit of a rum expert – gave us three good reasons for the midweek drinking session that ensued, not forgetting the exercise in international relations, bringing 5 Englishmen, 1 Latvian & 1 American together in the name of Rum.
