Day 115 – Thursday 12th January 2006
Given the events of the night before, it was probably not a wise move to book a canopy tour on which I would be dangling 60 feet in the air before zip-lining through the trees. But in my infinite wisdom, that it exactly what I did.
This particular canopy tour included a drive to a forest halfway up the local volcanoe, 17 zip-lines through the tree-tops, a rope swing, a rappel back down to the forest floor, and another drive back to Granada. Of course the road leading to the location of the canopy tour was a complete off road experience as well.
While I had an awesome time swinging through the trees 60 feet above the ground, I was still feeling the effects of the Flor de CaƱa from the previous evening. As I felt very sick, I have decided to pass on my knowledge – so please kids, don’t drink the night before a canopy tour. Despite my tender head the trip was pretty cool, and the whole thing was run very professionally with a good emphasis on the safety aspects of it.
I was informed (whether reliably I have no idea) that the original technology for the canopy tours was developed during the film The Medicine Man starring Sean Connery. In the movie is sent on a cancer research trip to the Amazon jungle, where he designs a series of swings to go from treetop to treetop without having to keep going up and down.
The tour lasted for about 4 hours all in and so by lunchtime I was back in Granada. I spent the afternoon catching up with the blog and playing board games (Scrabble, Mastermind) with the lads, who had wisely opted to stay in bed instead of getting up and coming with me.
