Panama City: Big City Nightlife

2 February 2006 18 Comments

Days 131 & 132 - Saturday 28th & Sunday 29th January 2006

Feeling a little groggy after Friday night @ the bad school disco in David (I found out it was supposed to be laides night as well!), the perfect way to overcome my hangover was to take the 8 hour bus ride to Panama City. This would kill two birds with one stone - firstly I would be able to catch up on missed sleep, and secondly I wouldn’t waste an otherwise unproductive day getting to Panama City.

Thus myself, Markus and Aaron caught the 11am bus from David to Panama City. The first few hours flew by and I went straight to sleep as soon as I boarded the bus, only waking up at the half way point when the bus stopped for a 30 minute break. Just enough time for me to grab a KFC, eat it and get back back on before we left.

For the next three and a half hours I mixed between dozing and reading. We eventually arrived in Panama City at about 7pm and took a taxi to a backpackers hostel. Feeling pretty awake after sleeping most of the day we decided to hit the town and we made our way to the supermarket to acquire some pre-party drinks. I opted for red wine in anticipation of my arrival in Argentina.

After leisurely drinking our take-out we walked the three blocks into the main party area of our particualar part of the city. It was about midnight and still onthing had really got started so we went into a bar and drank a few overpriced beers while looking at some of the talent Panama City has to offer.

There was no shortage of said talent, however the bar wasn’t livening up in the slightest so we went for a change of scenery, from the classy to the grungey. This is never a bad thing and straight away I made my presence known by getting onto the pool table. My lack of recent practise coupled with my Argentinan wine made things a little tricky for me, but natural talent always shines through, and playing doubles with a Panamanian dude we managed to win about 10 games consecutively. Admittedly he was probably the best player in the bar but there is no ‘I’ in team. Well actually there is in the Spanish word for team, equipo, but who cares.

By this time it was getting pretty late and there was no sign of the bar shutting. I got chatting to the Isreali owner of the bar and he siad it stays open as long as people are drinking. Pretty decent licencing laws then. At about 5.30 a few lads got chatting to some girls and we ended up go to a really random house party for a while. That didn’t last too long though as it was pretty weird and nobody wanted to stay. Therefore at about 6.30am we rolled back into the hostel. Apparently the next day would be write off too.
