Buenos Aires: Soccer Crazy

Day 146 – Sunday 12th February 2006

I woke up pretty early considering, however this probably wasn’t a good thing as I wandered around in a tired daze for the early afternoon. That was until Sunday roast was served. Argentina style.

It came in the form of a BBQ, together with a large helping of salad. The carne was served up in various forms, one after another. First came the chorizo, followed by the side of the cow, matahambre. Next was meat from the jowels, finally finishing with a roast and some sirloin steak. It was a true meat feast and was superb!

After the lunch, Lucia, her uncle, cousin and I jumped into her car and drove out to the River Plate stadium, where River Plate were playing Banfield in the Argentine league. The stadium has a capacity of 80,000 and was the host of the 1978 World Cup final in which Argentina beat Holland.

River Vs Banfield wasn’t quite on a par with that game but it still attracted a healthy crowd of around 40,000. We paid A$25 each for tickets in a relatively quiet area of the stadium. I would have preferred to be in with the action but I didn’t end up buying tickets in the right place.

After going a goal down River came back to win 3-1, so I saw the right team win. After the usual battle to get away from the game at full time I made it back to casa where I pretty much crashed out and I called time on the day.
