Torres del Paine: Leaving, But Not In Paine

by Roy

Days 158 & 159 – Friday 24th & Saturday 25th February 2006

The final day of hiking began late, as all I had to do was walk 2 hrs downhill to be picked up by the bus which would take me back to Puerto Natales. I could have chosen to get up at 4am and hike back up to see the Torres, but I woke up in the middle of the night and it was cloudy so I sacked it off.

Torres del Paine

My decision to hike up the day before had paid off! I didn’t feel the love for hiking back up there in the rain, so began a slow walk down the hill to the campsite. I still arrived with a good few hours to spare so carried on walking to the next pick up point as it was cold! It didn’t turn out to be a particuarly interesting walk though.

After being picked up and taken back to Puerto Natales I started sorting my stuff out and booked a ticket back to Argentina for the morning. After going out for dinner with a Britih couple who I had walked with for most of the week there was nothing left to do but all it a night.

Saturday started early with my 8am bus, which dragged on due to the border formalities. By the time I arrived in El Calafate in Argentina and sorting myself out, I needed to catch up on the blog and a weeks worth of emails, so I spent a few hours on the net. I also found the best deal in Argentina so far, an all you can eat buffet, with proper steak and different cuts of beef with salad and the trimmings. So three steaks, 4 plates of food, a dessert, a beer and £4 later I was stuffed to the brim. I knew I had overdone it, but thats just what you do at an all you can eat buffet.

Come the evening I fancied some wine so opened the carton I had bought in Chile and shared it with another British couple, before heading out to a bar for some more. I ended up pretty shit faced, but alss well that ends well.
