Days 161 & 162 – Monday 27th & Tuesday 28th February 2006
At midday on Monday I boarded a bus bound for Rio Gallegos, with the eventual aim of making it north to Esquel in the Lake District. I knew it would be a long trip but 48 hours was a bit excessive.
The first leg was a relatively short 4 hour hop over to Rio Gallegos, followed by a 4 hour lay-over in the bus station. That took me to 8pm. Then it was an 11 hour overnight bus to Comodoro Rivadavia. That was on a really shite bus that stopped every hour. At least it seemed like to me. These stops lasted about 20 minutes and woke everyone up who was lucky enough to be able to sleep.
Once I arrived in CR at about 7am, a little jaded from the bus journey I was told there were no further buses until midnight that evening. So with about 15 hours to kill I got on another bus to a different town a little closer to Esquel. From there i would catch the bus t 1am.
This town turned out to be a nothing kind of town, pretty bleak with nothing but a few shops and an internet cafe. I ended up walking out of town about 5km to a river that the tourist info people had promed as one of the highlights. I struggled to see the attraction and walked straight back into town. At lunchtime I even struggled to find a place that was serving food, it was that bleak.
I ended up doing a load of work on the blog and using the internet for most of the afternoon, which wasn’t too bad as I was really far behind (as always!) with the blog. Eventually 1am came around and I boarded my 2nd overnight bus in a row, which took me to the town of Esquel, my original destination.
