Santiago: New Town, New Government

This entry is part 5 of 6 in the series Chile

Day 173 – Saturday 11th March 2006

After travelling for 24 hours mas o menos the only thing I wanted was a bed. As I arrived in Santiago at 7am I wasn’t able to properly check-in to a hostel until a bit later, so I settled down in the TV room and used their couch as a bed in the interim. I managed to keep my eyes open to see Spurs lose to Chelsea, but I wish I hadn’t bothered.

Santiago

Once the football had finished I switched channels and saw the new Chilean President being sworn in at the Government offices in downtown Santiago. Being only about 15 minutes walk from downtown Santiago I thought it would be a good thing to witness so I dragged myself from the sofa and made the short walk to the Government Palacio. By the time I arrived (via a bit of wandering and a hike upto the lookout point over Santiago) the ceremonies had finished and the only evidence of the mornings activities were the camera crews and staging which were in the process of being dismantled. There wasn’t much else I felt like doing so I walked about looking at some of the monuments in the city and then returned to my hostel for a much needed kip!
