Panama City: The Canal

Day 133 - Monday 30th January 2006

No visit to Panama City would be complete without seeing the very thing that the country is famous for. Stretching 50 miles from Panama City to Colon, across the narrowest point in Central America, the Panama Canal was completed in 1914 at a cost of approximately $375 million.

Panama City: Big City Nightlife

Days 131 & 132 - Saturday 28th & Sunday 29th January 2006

Feeling a little groggy after Friday night @ the bad school disco in David (I found out it was supposed to be laides night as well!), the perfect way to overcome my hangover was to take the 8 hour bus ride to Panama City. This would kill two birds with one stone - firstly I would be able to catch up on missed sleep, and secondly I wouldn’t waste an otherwise unproductive day getting to Panama City.

Boquete: Back to David

Day 130 - Friday 27th January 2006

The rain hadn’t eased up in Boquete when we awoke, and not feeling much like putting wet clothes bacxk on and going hiking again we caught a bus back to the heat of David. This only took about an hour and arriving around lunch we went straighgt for some rotisserie chicken and then to the air conditioned internet cafe.

Cerro Punta: Hiking to Boquete

Day 129 - Thursday 26th January 2006

The hike from Cerro Punta to Boquete is known as Sendero los Quetzales, which roughly means the path of the Quetzales. Quetzales being birds. This walk runs through the Parque Nacional Volcan Baru, traversing the north side of the Vocan Baru, the highest peak in Panama. Covering some 35,000 acres the park is filled with different landscapes - from open fields to dense rainforest - and also some species of animal only found in this part of the world.

Cerro Punta: Closer to Nature

Day 128 - Wednesday 25th January 2006

The only reason I went to David was to take a trip from there to the area of Chiquiri in the highlands, from where there were supposed to be a lot of interesting hikes. This would enable me to see some of the countryside, as well as get some much needed exercise.

David: Too Hot for Comfort

Day 127 - Tuesday 24th January 2006

After catching a water taxi to the mainland of Panama, on the way passing through what looked like a shanty town on stilts, I caught a bus to the town of David, Panama’s third largest city. It proudly boats that it is the hottest place in Panama, however after being there for about an hour I could not see how that was a attraction.

Bocas del Toro: More Beach Life

Day 126 - Monday 23rd January 2006

The region of Bocas del Toro is supposed to have some of the most beautiful beaches in Panama, so I decided to have yet another day lapping up the sun. I caught a bus to Bocas del Drago, one of the beaches on the other side of the island and walked the length of it looking for a picture perfect setting in which to lay and generally do nothing.
